Bio

Oleg Romanishin is a Ukrainian grandmaster. An aggressive player with rather few draws, he earned the title in 1976. At Leningrad 1977 in a field of 18 players, Romanishin won on the tiebreaker over GM Mikhail Tal, a half-point ahead of GM Vasily Smyslov and 1.5 ahead of GM Anatoly Karpov.

Romanishin was still competing in over-the-board tournaments as recently as 2019. Several opening variations are named for him, most notably 4.g3 in the Nimzo-Indian Defense, the Kasparov-Romanishin Variation.
