Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu is a Romanian grandmaster who played for Germany from 2014 until 2023 when he returned to Romania. He won the Romanian Chess Championship in 1996, won the European Individual Chess Championship in 2005, and beat FIDE world champion Veselin Topalov the following year in a four-game exhibition match.

Another bright spot in Nisipeanu’s career came in 1999, when he reached the semifinals of the FIDE World Chess Championship after defeating GMs Vassily Ivanchuk and Alexei Shirov. Nisipeanu is known for being a very aggressive player. In October 2005, he reached his peak rating (2707) and world ranking (15).
