Tiviakov and Popovic winners in Leiden and Amsterdam
The chess news has exploded this week with three super tournaments taking place at the same time. We're catching up here and there, and we still owe you a final report about the strong opens in Leiden (won by GM Sergei Tiviakov) and Amsterdam (won by GM Dusan Popovic).Leiden
The 5th 'LCT' (Leiden Chess Tournament) took place July 8-17 in Leiden, The Netherlands. It was a 9-round Swiss with 140 participants divided over two groups. The total prize fund was 5,500 Euro and the first prize in the A group is 1,750 Euro. The strongest participants were Predrag Nikolic (2629), David Howell (2625) and Sergey Tiviakov (2623). We left the tournament after five rounds, when English grandmaster David Howell was sharing the lead with GM Deepan Chakkravarthy of India; both scored 4.5/5. Sergey Tiviakov finished his tournament by scoring 4.5 points in his last five games, defeating tournament leader Nikolic in the final round. The Groningen resident finished sole first with 7.5/9.

Amsterdam
The 1st Science Park Chess Tournament took place July 9-17 in the University of Amsterdam Sports Centre at the Science Park in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The tournament was a 9-round Swiss with more than 280 participants divided over four groups. The first prize in the A group was 3,000 Euro. The strongest participants were Dimitri Reinderman (2618), Nikola Sedlak (2580) and Dusan Popovic (2569).
After five rounds the leaders were GMs Nikola Sedlak, Dusan Popovic, B. Adhiban, Joshua Friedel, Aleksandr Lenderman, and IM Roeland Pruijssers. In the final standings almost the same names were sharing first place: Popovic, Pruijssers, Lenderman, Sedlak and Adhiban.GM Dusan Popovic won the tournament on tie-break. It's good to hear that the Serbian grandmaster is doing all right. Two years ago he made the headlines when he was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure. Several fundraising tournaments were organized, including an ICC simul by Magnus Carlsen. In Amsterdam he told Macauley Peterson that, a year after his surgery in Moscow, he's doing well, and was very grateful for the support of the chess community back then.Dutch IM Pruijssers, a 21-year-old student from Utrecht, scored his third GM norm and only needs to improve his Elo to become the next Dutch GM. Matthew Tan of Amstelveen scored an IM norm.As ChessVibes editor-in-chief I regret the fact that I couldn't visit this tournament in my home town, due to a holiday in Greece. The tournament was held in the Sports Centre Universum at the Amsterdam Science Park. The playing venue is located 5 km from the Amsterdam city centre.

Universum is the Sports Centre of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). It offers 9,500 m2 in many halls with a number of activities, like climbing.
One of the side events of the chess tournament is the Open Dutch Championship Schafeltennis - a mix of table tennis and chess. It was won by FM Rob Bertholee.

There were four groups, playing in the air conditioned sports centre. At 17.48 hr only three games in group A were still going on.
Tournament winner Dusan Popovic (Serbia, 2569). He beat Lenderman and drew with Pruijssers, Sedlak and Adhiban.
Shared first: GM Alexandr Lenderman (left, USA, 2525) and IM Roeland Pruijssers (right, Netherlands, 2461). Lenderman was the only player who managed to defeat Pruijssers. Despite this loss, Pruijssers performed at 2679, his third GM norm.

FM Matthew Tan (22 years old) finished 6th with 6.5/9 with a 2549 performance, scoring his second IM-norm. In the background you see his younger brother Jonathan (17 years old) who scored 5/9 with an 2358 performance.
Hungarian WGM Veronika Schneider (2331) scored 4/9. She won a game on her birthday (17 July)
GM Dimitri Reinderman (2618) was is a very bad shape: 5/9 - losing 23.6 rating points.
The unpredictable IM Manuel Bosboom also scored 5 points.
Tom Bottema (2247) is webmaster for the Royal Dutch Chess Federation's site and press chief in both Wijk aan Zee and Hoogeveen. In the 1990's he scored two IM norms and had a rating above 2400. After that he stopped playing chess tournaments. Lately he started to play again, trying to score his last norm to secure the IM-title. He played this tournament as preparation for the BDO Challenger in Haarlem this August.
Tata Steel Chess Tournament director Jeroen van den Berg (rated 1962) scored 7/9 in the B-group, claiming shared second place
Wayne Welch (1810) plays a lot of chess tournaments. He scored 5/9 in the C-group.
After the game it's time for a serious game of pool in the sports centre café.
