Welcome to the Charter Oak Chess Club!

Our club is based out of the Mark Twain Library in Redding, CT.  We offer free group classes every week on Mondays from 5:30-6:30 pm for teens and 6:30-7:30 pm for adults.

My name is Matthew Shirvell and I have been teaching chess full time for the past 6 years. Before starting my own club, I worked at Team DIG USA where I won 2020 Coach of the Year, and the Chess Club of Fairfield County as the Club Manager.

I currently work as a tournament director and head instructor for the Milford Chess Academy. We hold weekly tournaments and bring in big names for events like GM Ben Finegold!

I teach players of all ages and rating ranges up to USCF 1500 (Chess.com 1700).  After they hit this goal, I refer students to one of the master level coaches I know. I am a big believer in Study Plans which is why each of my students receives one on their first day. When we finish one goal, we write a new study plan focusing on a different area of the game. This focused approach has helped me turn beginners into State Champions!
